It is known as discharging of the capacitor. Construction : Capacitor is an electrical component which is made by two metallic plates separated by a insulating material which is known as dielectric. Capacitor is named according to the dielectric material used in it. The construction of capacitor is shown in fig. 1. If AC supply is given to the capacitor then the polarity of both the plates changes alternatively according to the input AC.

There is very low frequency loss in it, because of these silient features it is used as dielectric material in the capacitors. These type of capacitors are known as mica capacitor. Since winding of mica is not possible therefore mica capacitor are always flat in shape. These capacitors are used where more accuracy and high dielectric constant is needed. Mica capacitors are of various types.

Capacitors are extensively used for coupling and decoupling purposes in electronic circuits. In coupling applications, capacitors enable the transmission of AC signals while blocking DC components. They are used to connect different stages of amplifiers, allowing the AC signal to pass from one stage to another, while maintaining DC isolation. Capacitors also play a crucial role in decoupling, where they provide a stable source of local power to sensitive components. By placing capacitors near integrated circuits or microcontrollers, they help to smooth out voltage fluctuations caused by sudden changes in current demand. Choosing the right capacitor involves considering multiple criteria, such as capacitance, voltage rating, temperature and environmental considerations, size and package type, frequency response, and cost.

All capacitors have a certain amount of resistance to the passage of AC current. ESR Equivalent Series Resistance is the sum of all internal resistances of a capacitor measured in Ohms. An ideal capacitor has ZERO ohms ESR. From the diagram below you can see a resistor in serieswith a "PERFECT CAPACITOR". The value of the resistor is called ESR.

To protect the capacitor from moisture coating of insulating material is done over it. The other type of capacitor which is in the form of resistance is known as tubular type ceramic capacitor. In these type of capa­citors, silver coating is done inside and outside the ceramic tube, which acts as two conductive plates.

Electrolytic Capacitors have a tendency to increase its ESR overtime due to drying or corrosion. High ESR is a frequent problem in today’s electronic circuit. Even a 1 or 2 ohms rise in ESR can cause complicated problems. Under normal conditions the ESR has a very low value, which stays that way for many years unless the rubber seal is defective, in which case the electrolyte’s water component gradually dries out and the ESR creeps up with time. The increase in ESR increases both voltage drops within the capacitor and the heat, produced in the capacitors due to resistive heating. If you don’t check for ESR, you may be in for a "TOUGH DOG" repair.

Talking of the non metal plating, the most widely used name is Teflon. The chemical name of Teflon is PTFE polytetrafluoroethylene, a polymer containing carbon and fluorine. It was developed way back in 1938. PTFE is resistant to high temperatures, corrosion and chemical reactions. Also it is quite strong and durable.

High ESR is the first sign of a capacitor failure. High ESR will cause complete circuit failure, over heating of capacitor, loading of the Circuit Functions Ceramic Capacitors, overstressing of other circuit components and other undesirable effects. Because measuring an electrolytic capacitor with an analog or digital capacitance meter can MISLEAD a technician into believing that a defective capacitor is good. This can waste your precious time and you are unable to repair the equipment. Which means you can’t charge your customer!If you don’t test for ESR on the capacitor, you will always miss the bad capacitor. Normally, these bad capacitors have high ESR reading which your normal multimeter or digital capacitance meter can’t measure.

Historical texts use other, obsolete submultiples of the farad, such as "mf" and "mfd" for microfarad µF; "mmf", "mmfd", "pfd", "µµF" for picofarad pF. Stray capacitance between the input and output in amplifier circuits can be troublesome because it can form a path for feedback, which can cause instability and parasitic oscillation in the amplifier. It is often convenient for analytical purposes to replace this capacitance with a combination of one input to ground capacitance and one output to ground capacitance; the original configuration – including the input to output capacitance – is often referred to as a pi configuration. When the input to output gain is very large, the equivalent input to ground impedance is very small while the output to ground impedance is essentially equal to the original input to output impedance. The capacitance of nanoscale dielectric capacitors such as quantum dots may differ from conventional formulations of larger capacitors. In particular, the electrostatic potential difference experienced by electrons in conventional capacitors is spatially well defined and fixed by the shape and size of metallic electrodes in addition to the statistically large number of electrons present in conventional capacitors.
