Door Handle Replacement

Door handles seem like a small detail, but if you dislike the way they look or find them difficult to use and use, you should consider replacing them. Installing the new handle on your door is simple if you've got patience.

The majority of modern door handles come with cover plates that hide the screws to create a stylish appearance. If your new handle does not already have them connected, you'll need to attach them separately.

Removal of the Old Handle

Once the screws are removed, the latch plate should slide out of the door with ease. If it is stuck or doesn't move then use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate up.

Now you can move on to preparing the new door strike plate for installation. Using the wood screws that were included with your new handles, attach the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Don't over tighten your screws as this could damage the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and open the door to check if it latches and closes correctly. If it doesn't you'll need to adjust the strike plate up or down, or even forward or back until the door shuts and latches properly.

If the door is still jiggling or moving, it may be necessary to expand the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more prevalent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too shallow, the wrong size latch or damaged strike plate. If this is the case, use a metal filing instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Remove the Latch

The latch is a curved metal piece that slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward and allows you to open the door. It also hooks into an opening in the door's frame so that the door stays closed. If your door shakes when you close, replacing the latch could be the only thing needed to correct the issue.

The screws that secure the door latch are hard to spot, but you can usually use a screwdriver to make a small hole in the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After you've removed your trim plate, it'll be simple to remove the latch as well as the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in place.

If the latch isn't easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Place the item into the slot for the latch that is recessed and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the that the latch and handle are beginning to separate. You may have repeat this process a few times before you can remove the latch.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without any issues once you have removed the old one. Make sure the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and is aligned with the screw chambers, and then use your new screws to fasten it to the strike plate and door frame.

Measure the existing backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole on the door's front and the edge) before installing the new handle. You should also check that the size of the latch on the new handle is a good match to the measurement of your existing handle.

If you are replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if the old lock cylinder has been damaged, then you'll need an entirely new one. If you're not changing the locks, the new latch should fit in your existing recess, and be compatible with your current keys. Be sure to choose a latch with a rectangular cover plate that match your handles.

Then remove the Cover Plate

Most doors have gaps between the door jamb and the inner edge of the frame, which allows for a handle, however not all do. If yours isn't, you will need to drill a hole in the door. It's the same procedure as opening a door locked, but you will have to be extra careful not to harm the door's frame or frame.
